Cape Deli and Matrix Software: Striving for Excellence in Biltong Manufacturing
From a convenient protein source to a beloved social indulgence, biltong is a timeless classic that continues to tantalise taste buds and unite cultures across the world. However, biltong manufacturers face a myriad of challenges in meeting the growing demand for this sought-after snack.
From sourcing high-quality meat to ensuring consistent flavour profiles and navigating strict food safety requirements, biltong manufacturers must overcome various obstacles to deliver the authentic taste and quality that consumers expect.
Cape Deli, a Cape Town based biltong and dried meat manufacturer, which caters for local and international markets, found that Matrix Software was the right fit for them as an ERP provider to help them overcome specific challenges.
Says Louis Myburgh, Systems Developer at Cape Deli, “When it comes to the specific challenges that the industry faces, traceability is at the top of the list due to the sheer complexity of the supply system. Meat cutting and the cost of that process is also a critical factor for us. Stockholding and gathering accurate information regarding product ageing was cumbersome and problematic before partnering with Matrix Software.”
Traceability of meat and food products has long been under the industry spotlight with the two main drivers being food safety and authentication. As competition increases globally, it is critical that technologies help safeguard manufacturers against, among others, non-compliance with industry standards and inadequate quality control.
Says Myburgh, “Cape Deli achieved 99.5% in its most recent FSA audit result, and Matrix Software’s traceability solution certainly contributed to making information more easily available to help us obtain this result.”
With every step meticulously tracked and managed within the Matrix Software ecosystem, Cape Deli will now be able to confidently trace the journey of each product from raw materials to finished goods, to final destination. This not only ensures compliance with regulatory requirements but also instils trust and confidence among consumers, strengthening Cape Deli’s reputation for quality and integrity.
What began as a simple labelling requirement has now evolved into a comprehensive stock management and traceability solution offered by Matrix Software. Says Johanette Le Roux, Executive Account Manager at Matrix Software, “When Cape Deli moved to its new manufacturing facility, Matrix Software’s solutions and support played a crucial role in ensuring a seamless transition.
Our team took care of the groundwork for meticulous product traceability and supplier payment handling, leveraging Matrix Software’s Purchase Order, Goods Received and Supplier Invoicing processes.”
The Stock Movement Reports, Stock on Hand, Purchasing and Sales Reports provide Cape Deli with a holistic view of their operations and helps to pinpoint process failures and inefficiencies. By leveraging the valuable insights gleaned from these reports, Cape Deli can identify bottlenecks, streamline workflows, and enhance cross-functional collaboration, thereby accelerating project timelines and maximising productivity.
Says Myburgh, “With Matrix Software, stock levels are available at the push of a button at any time of the day. Response time is immediate and this ensures that we do not run out of stock and prevents over purchasing. The risk of losses is also greatly reduced. Also, being able to obtain information immediately gives the management team an accurate picture of what is happening on the production floor and, as such, makes proactive decision making possible.”
“During the production phase, Matrix Software’s Block Tests and Recipes provided Cape Deli with valuable insights into their manufacturing processes,” says Le Roux. Block Tests break down raw ingredients into multiple components, providing a granular view of the production chain and giving clients a comprehensive picture of how each component contributes to the final product.
This detailed analysis enables them to identify areas for improvement and adapt their processes accordingly. Additionally, Recipes within the Matrix Software platform function as virtual blueprints for product creation, combining multiple ingredients and components to produce a finished product.
Looking ahead, both partners are excited at the prospect of working together in the future to achieve even greater success. “As a leader in the meat processing industry for the past 20 years, we strive to consistently deliver the best quality at the right time, at the right price. By using Matrix Software as our ERP, we can achieve our goals”, says Myburgh.
