11 October 2023. Johannesburg. NOSH Food Rescue NPC (“NOSH”), a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing food insecurity and reducing food waste in South Africa, is gearing up to host their unique and impactful Odd Plate dinner. The event is aimed at raising awareness about surplus food repurposing. Diners will be treated to a multiple- course gourmet meal, showcasing dishes prepared with surplus ingredients rescued from food producers across the value chain .

The dinner is scheduled to take place at 18:30 for 19:00 on Thursday, 19th October 2023, at the prestigious HTA School of Culinary Art in Randburg.

“Odd Plate events go beyond enjoying just the culinary experience. They highlight the importance of community involvement and responsible resource management. We want to showcase how surplus produce, which would have otherwise been discarded for a variety of reasons, can be turned into delicious and visually appealing dishes in the hopes of inspiring households across the country to join in our mission of creating a South Africa without hunger and zero food waste in landfills,” commented Hanneke van Linge, founder of NOSH.

The lavish dinner will once again be expertly prepared by HTA’s Principal, Carien van Tonder supported by the lecturers and students of the HTA culinary school. Chef van Tonder and HTA are renowned for their culinary prowess and share a mutual commitment towards reducing food waste in their industry.

The dinner will not only feature a gastronomic experience in a scenic venue, but also presents an opportunity for diners to engage with and contribute to NOSH’s cause.

Waste is a verb – food is not waste until it gets wasted. Food surplus is not necessarily food waste, but rather a proxy for it, and occurs when food availability and stock exceed the demand, driven by overproduction and many other factors. This can take place at every stage of the supply chain from farms to households. Whilst this is a global issue, it poses a particular challenge to developing countries, such as South Africa, who face the persistent challenge of food insecurity.

Many food retailers across the country have a reduced wastage policy and donate their surplus food to organisations such as NOSH, who in turn redistribute the food to verified non-profit organisations collectively feeding thousands of hungry people daily.

The Odd Plate dinner forms part of NOSH’s larger vision to reduce food insecurity by diverting, repurposing, and redistributing prepared and perishable surplus food that is still wholesome and nutritious. Over the past five years, the organization has provided over 6.5 million meals to soup kitchens and feeding schemes, in the process rescuing 2 267 tons of food that would have gone to waste.

NOSH urges the community to support the event by attending the luncheon for a fun, and simultaneously impactful afternoon out, and encourages donations from those unable to attend.

BACKGROUND ON NOSH

NOSH Food Rescue NPC (NOSH) aims to reduce food insecurity, by diverting, repurposing, and redistributing prepared and perishable surplus food that is still wholesome and nutritious. NOSH has provided over 6.5 million meals to soup kitchens and feeding schemes over the past 3 years.

Poor nutrition leads to increased illness, reduced life expectancy, poor education outcomes, increased violence and unnecessary suffering amongst the poorest sections of society. It entrenches and intensifies existing inequalities which in turn lead to civil unrest and other societal ills.

Food insecurity is a global problem which impacts the poorest sections of all societies. NOSH currently operates in and around Johannesburg. According to the Johannesburg City council, 27% of people in Johannesburg are food insecure and this rises to 47% in inner city environments. Food security was prioritized by the South African government in 2010.

South Africa has been referred to as ‘the most unequal country in the world’, and one of the key parts of this inequality is the disparity in access to good nutrition between people that live in close geographic proximity to each other, as well as to food production facilities.

13 million South Africans routinely experience hunger, though more than thirty percent of the country’s food is wasted. In South Africa in 2013, approximately 10 million tons of food waste was generated, out of about 31 million tons available.
