Boeries champs ready for taste battle
The 25th annual Championship Boerewors competition is heating up. The top three finalists in the 2017 Championship Boerewors competition, Queen Mathebule (from Malamulele, Limpopo), James Lebepe (from Atteridgeville, Gauteng) and Moses Mathebule (from Lenyenye, Limpopo) are ready to put their boerewors recipe to the public taste test.
Shoprite and Checkers are proud of the country’s boerewors tradition and celebrate it by hosting the annual Championship Boerewors competition. The supermarket chains’ butcheries are famous for exceptional meat products and the group is always looking for new recipes and ideas in order to offer consumers the best in quality and variety. The Championship Boerewors competition plays a pivotal role in helping the group to achieve this aim.
Over the past 25 years, the title of Boerewors Champion has been conquered by South Africans from all walks of life, from housewives to butchery managers, and even by a (then) 13-year-old primary school learner. All boerie pioneers, connoisseurs and enthusiasts with an exceptional traditional recipe, plus the skills to make boerewors from scratch, are encouraged to enter.
The South African Chefs Association (SACA) is a recognised authority on food and is once again in charge of the judging, ensuring that all entries adhere to the guidelines for making truly traditional boerewors.
Entrants battled it out in six Championship Rounds held nationwide in July 2017. A total of eighteen contestants, three winners from each Championship Round, then proceeded to the Top 18 Round in Cape Town, where the top three recipes were chosen by a panel of expert judges from SACA.
The top three recipes will be available in Shoprite and Checkers supermarkets nationwide between Friday 18 August and Friday 8 September 2017. Then it will be up to the South African public to buy, braai, try and vote for the recipe they believe deserves to win the 25th Championship Boerewors title. By doing so, one lucky consumer stands the chance of winning a brand new Toyota Aygo.
The winner of the 2017 Championship Boerewors competition will be announced on Wednesday 13 September and will drive off in a Toyota Hilux 2.8 GD-6 Double Cab Raised Body Raider with the honour of having his or her recipe crowned and sold as #SAsNo1. The winning recipe will be on sale in all Shoprite and Checkers stores from Friday 15 September 2017, just in time for Heritage Day. M
